David Ross Brower was a leading environmentalist who was dubbed "the most effective conservationist in the world". He helped create some of the most widely known and effective environmental organizations, including the Sierra Club Foundation, Friends of the Earth, Earth Island Institute and the League of Conservation Voters. In his younger years, David Brower was a noted mountaineer, and this helped shape his love of nature and desire to protect biodiversity and natural habitats. David Brower's ideas and views influenced UNESCO's creation of a system of World Heritage sites, which lists and conserves international sites, such as forests, rivers, mountains, buildings or cities, that are significant to humanity's common heritage.
