Anwarul Chowdhury has been one of the greatest champions of the culture of peace program at the United Nations. While he was Bangladesh's Ambassador to the UN, he served as president of the General Assembly. In 2002, Secretary General Kofi Annan appointed Ambassador Chowdhury as the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States, helping to give a voice to the concerns and needs of the poorest nations of the world. For his efforts in promoting peace, Ambassador Chowdhury has been honored with the U Thant Peace Award and the UNESCO Gandhi Gold Medal for Culture of Peace.
