Maggie
Kuhn loved her job and didn't think it was fair that she had to
stop working when she was forced to retire on her 65th birthday.
So, she got together with other retirees in the same situation,
and started the Gray Panthers Movement in 1970. In addition to
addressing age discrimination, pension rights, nursing home reform,
and other issues directly related to senior citizens, the Gray
Panthers took on many larger social issues, starting with ending
the war in Vietnam, and including working for economic and social
justice, human rights, integration and ending racism, mental health,
and world peace. Maggie Kuhn's goal was to show that the elderly
have much to offer society, and that they can lead fulfilling
and meaningful lives by taking control of their lives and getting
involved in issues that they care about. The Gray Panthers' motto
is "Age and Youth In Action" and they strive to engage young and
old to work together to create a better world.
