Frédéric Passy was the natural choice to receive the first Nobel Peace Prize, which he shared with Henri Dunant, the founder of the Red Cross in 1901. He was a well known economist who was known throughout Europe as the grand old man of the peace movement for his more than 50 years of working for peace in Europe.
