"Peace can only last
where human rights are respected, where the people are fed, and where individuals
and nations are free."
-- 14th Dalai
Lama The problems
we face today, violent conflicts, destruction of nature, poverty, hunger and so
on, are human-created problems which can be resolved through human effort, understanding
and the development of a sense of brotherhood and sisterhood. We need to cultivate
a universal responsibility for one another and the planet we share. --

As a people, we value family, education and success. Hunger is an enemy to all
three. Scientific studies have demonstrated that even brief periods of hunger
can permanently inhibit a child's mental, emotional and physical growth. Kids
who are hungry do poorly in school and are unlikely to grow into productive adults.
For families, experiencing hunger means living in a world of isolation and shame.
Caring citizens must put an end to this disgrace. -- Ted

When we think about
millions of hungry children, we don't think about America. We relate the problem
to other nations, like Ethiopia, India or Somalia. The sad truth is that one is
five American kids is at risk due to poor nutrition.
-- Kristen Davis
We
cannot stick our heads in the sand concerning the issue of hunger in America.
Even though this subject seldom reaches the front page of our newspapers or is
featured on news programs because of its lack of sensationalism, the problem exists
in massive proportions and must be defeated.

Yes, I am my brother's keeper. I am under a moral obligation to him that is inspired,
not by any maudlin sentimentality but by the higher duty I owe myself. What would
you think me if I were capable of seating myself at a table and gorging myself
with food and saw about me the children of my fellow beings starving to death.

Now
my friends, I am opposed to the system of society in which we live today, not
because I lack the natural equipment to do for myself but because I am not satisfied
to make myself comfortable knowing that there are thousands of my fellow men who
suffer for the barest necessities of life. We were taught under the old ethic
that man's business on this earth was to look out for himself. That was the ethic
of the jungle; the ethic of the wild beast. Take care of yourself, no matter what
may become of your fellow man. Thousands of years ago the question was asked;
''Am I my brother's keeper?'' That question has never yet been answered in a way
that is satisfactory to civilized society. Yes, I am my brother's keeper. I am
under a moral obligation to him that is inspired, not by any maudlin sentimentality
but by the higher duty I owe myself. What would you think me if I were capable
of seating myself at a table and gorging myself with food and saw about me the
children of my fellow beings starving to death.

It
is inconceivable that, in the richest nation in the world, we have 30 million
people at risk of hunger. I believe that, if we truly make a commitment as a nation,
we can defeat hunger.

the child of basic human rights to health care, education and proper nutrition.

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies,
in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are

Many times, a child's struggle against hunger begins before he or she is born
because the mother is undernourished. Making sure prenatal care and proper nutrition
are available for expectant mothers in need is a critical part of ending childhood
hunger. -- Hector

"Every week a tsunami rips through poor towns and villages all over the world
... That tsunami is hunger." -- Colin
Farrell "Every
week a tsunami rips through poor towns and villages all over the world. It claims
25,000 lives a day, 175,000 a week. It sweeps children from the arms of their
mothers, robs hundreds of millions of any hope for the future. That tsunami is
hunger. Help us end it now." -- Colin

Our country offers
such great opportunities for us all. Unfortunately, too many hard-working citizens
go day to day without enough food to eat.

The full extent
of the problem of hunger is not obvious to most of us. We see the homeless, but
there are a great number of working poor, struggling to survive, who don't have
enough money to put adequate food on the table. We must find a solution to this
ever-increasing problem — and quickly.
-- Scott Glenn
| Our
society is only as healthy as our most vulnerable citizens. It is unconscionable
that the weakest links in our country are our hungry children. No other Western
industrialized nation has widespread hunger within its borders. We really must
put an end to hunger in the United States if we are to keep our prosperity and
protect the future. -- Linda

"When
food becomes scarce, refugees often turn to desperate measures to feed themselves
and their families. We are particularly worried about the health of the refugee
population, domestic violence and refugees resorting to illegal employment or
even to prostitution, just to put enough food on the table."

Guterres, U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, 2005-

No one in this country need
go hungry, and alleviating the problem is primarily a matter of readjusting our
priorities. In both the government and the private sector, self-interest has displaced
the ideal of community that made this country great. The old world view of "us,
we, our" has been replaced by "I, me, mine." The reasons for this are manifold
and complex, but at the end of the day, we need to remember that, if one of us
is suffering needlessly, all of us are diminished.
-- Don Henley, singer/songwriter

this country of the bountiful harvest, everyone can have enough to eat — we have
