Edward Abbey was an American writer who advocated for environmental issues and radical reform of the government's policies about the way public land is developed and abused. Dubbed the "Thoreau of the American West" his fiction and nonfiction works continue to inspire environmental activists to action. Abbey's years as a Park Ranger at several national parks provided the inspiration for many of his books. Among his best-know works are the nonfiction book, Desert Solitaire and his novel, The Monkey Wrench Gang.
